The elder has an unrivalled fan club among the trees and shrubs of our land. It includes other plants such as lichens and mosses, and animals such as warblers, blackbirds and robins, as well as badgers, beavers and wild rabbits! Other servants of the shrub are colonies of microbes, known as ‘microbiota’, which serve its roots, leaves and even its flowers. On the latter, they play half the role in synthesising the heady perfume diffused by the white corollas!
You too can join the elderberry fan club: protect or plant this shrub and tell others about its benefits for people and nature. Read all about it in My friend the eldertree!
